EN 54 Family Map: Which Part Applies to Each Fire Alarm Product?

EN 54 Family Map: Which Part Applies to Each Fire Alarm Product?

A quick product-to-standard reference for fire detection and fire alarm systems

The essential distinction
EN 54 is not one universal product certificate. It is a family of parts addressing different products and functions. “EN 54 compliant” is therefore incomplete unless the applicable part, current edition/amendments, certificate scope and system compatibility are identified.

Why EN 54-2 alone is not enough

EN 54-2 addresses control and indicating equipment. Power supplies, field devices, voice alarm functions, interfaces and system compatibility may fall under other parts. EN 54-13 is not a single product certificate, but rather a 'system certificate' indicating that the control panel and field devices have been tested and approved together by an independent testing institute. Procurement should therefore request both product-level evidence and system-level compatibility documentation.

Request during document checks

  • Certificate exactly matching the product name and model code

  • Standard part number, edition and if any changes.

  • Notified Body information and certificate scope

  • Declaration of Performance (DoP) and Notified Body approved CE marking as a legal requirement, if the relevant EN 54 standard is harmonised.

  • Compatibility list, user/installation manual and firmware limitations

Certificate ≠ system design

A product certificate does not automatically mean that the device's placement in the project or its cause-and-effect scenario is correct. Product conformity and the verification of project design, installation, and commissioning are separate layers.

2. Detection product map

Confirm technology, classification, environment and certificate model scope

EN 54-31

Multi-sensor detectors using smoke, carbon monoxide and optionally heat sensors

Confirm technology, classification, environment and certificate model scope

Three questions for correct mapping

•  Which fire phenomenon is detected: smoke, heat, flame, carbon monoxide or a combination?

•  Is detection point-type, line-type, duct-mounted or based on aspirating sampling?

•  Does the certificate product description and model code exactly match the offered product?

Common error
Not every product called a “smoke detector” belongs under EN 54-7. Beam, aspirating, duct and multi-sensor devices may fall under different parts.

3. Alarm and connection products

EN 54

Product / function

Key note

EN 54-3

Sounder

Audible fire alarm notification

EN 54-11

Manual call point

Manual initiation of a fire alarm

EN 54-23

Visual alarm device

Coverage volume and mounting classification

EN 54-24

Voice alarm loudspeaker

Loudspeaker used in a voice alarm system

EN 54-25

Radio-linked component

Radio layer; does not replace the functional product part

How to read EN 54-25

For a wireless detector or alarm device, EN 54-25 may cover the radio link while another EN 54 part covers the detection or notification function. Verify that all relevant scopes match the exact product model.

4. Product evidence, system compatibility and design

Layer

Question to answer

Product standard

Does the product meet the performance requirements within its scope?

System compatibility

Do connected components operate safely and predictably together?

Design and installation

Is the correct product installed in the correct location and cause-and-effect scenario?

Maintenance and testing

Is continued performance demonstrated through tests and records?

EN 54-14 is different

EN 54-14 is guidance for planning, design, installation, commissioning, use and maintenance; it should not be presented as a product certificate. Apply it together with national rules, project requirements and competent-authority expectations.

5. Procurement checklist

•  ☐ Product code and certificate model match exactly.

•  ☐ Applicable EN 54 part matches the product function.

•  ☐ Certificate scope, annexes, edition and amendments are verified.

•  ☐ Declaration of Performance and marking are verified for the target market where applicable.

•  ☐ Panel-device compatibility and supported firmware are documented.

•  ☐ Environmental and mounting classifications suit the application.

•  ☐ Cause-and-effect, power and battery calculations are updated.

•  ☐ Commissioning tests, as-built documents and training are included.

6. Frequently asked questions

Is “EN 54 certified system” sufficient?

No. Identify the applicable part for each product, exact model scope and evidence of system compatibility.

Does an EN 54-2 panel certificate cover all connected devices?

No. Detectors, call points, sounders, isolators and modules have their own applicable parts and compatibility requirements.

Is EN 54-25 alone enough for a wireless detector?

Usually not. EN 54-25 addresses the radio link; the functional detection part should also be checked.

Is EN 54-14 a product certificate?

No. It is guidance for planning, design, installation, commissioning, use and maintenance.

Why confirm the standard again before publication?

Editions, amendments and harmonised/designated status can change, and target-market rules may differ.

Conclusion
Manage EN 54 conformity as an evidence chain: the right part, exact product model, current documents and demonstrated system compatibility. Finder quality and project teams can support product-document mapping and system architecture verification.
